About Tony Kakuk, CFP®

Through his years of experience, Tony Kakuk has developed the ability to speak two languages — the language of the business operator and the language of the financial advisor. This is how Tony works with business owners to help them navigate both their personal and business financial needs.

That dual fluency didn't happen by accident — and it didn't start in a boardroom. It started on a football field. Tony walked on at St. Cloud State University with no scholarship and no guarantees. He earned his way into the starting lineup, became a key contributor, and after his sophomore year his performance earned him a scholarship. By his senior year he had been named team captain, won Defensive MVP, and earned All-Conference honors. It was his first lesson in what disciplined effort, relentless preparation, and sustained performance under pressure actually produce — a lesson he has applied in every chapter since.

His professional journey began not in finance, but on the factory floor. Tony joined 3M in 1990 fresh out of college, spending seven years in supply chain and production management learning how world-class organizations build operational excellence from the inside out. In 1996, while still at 3M, he earned his MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. That degree opened the door to PricewaterhouseCoopers, where Tony accepted a position as a Principal Consultant in supply chain — and relocated to the West Coast to begin the next chapter.

At PwC, Tony spent three years advising companies on process optimization and operational strategy, but it was his next move that would define his approach. He joined a private equity group as the General Manager of two recently acquired metal plating companies on the West Coast — part of a six-company vertical integration strategy in the connector manufacturing industry. There he learned firsthand how PE firms take owner-operated businesses and apply institutional-grade processes to build growth, improve customer service, and create enterprise value with an exit in mind. When the Dot-Com Crash and Telecom meltdown of 2000-2001 unwound the deal, Tony walked away with something more valuable than the exit — a blueprint for building and scaling a business.

He immediately put that blueprint to work for himself.

In 2002, Tony acquired a struggling 70-person metal finishing operation running in the red. Armed with the blueprint he had developed in the PE world — valuation, LOI, due diligence, financing, and operational transformation — and the conviction that he could turn it around, he did exactly that. Within months the business was profitable. Within years it was experiencing exponential growth. In 2005, he merged the company with a larger operation, took a minority interest, and subsequently divested — his first successful exit. It was the PE blueprint proven out on his own capital, his own risk, and his own conviction.

In 2006, Tony acquired an exclusive private training gym in Orange County, purchasing it during the height of the subprime mortgage boom. When the Great Financial Crisis hit, he didn't just survive — he repositioned. By pivoting the gym to serve a truly high net worth clientele and applying creative cost management, Tony turned an existential threat into a stronger, more resilient business — one he continues to own and operate today.

What followed was perhaps his most important chapter — and the one least visible on a resume. For nearly two decades, Tony devoted himself to two things simultaneously: building a thriving, relationship-driven business and raising his two daughters as a single parent. He made sure they got to club volleyball practices, out of town tournaments, and every commitment in between — and in the gym, he personally trained them in sports specific resistance training, plyometrics, and speed drills. He tutored them through their studies and saw them both graduate from college — showing up fully in both roles without compromising either. The gym didn't just survive those years. It became a community, built on the same lifelong relationships and deep personal trust that define his approach to wealth advisory today.

In 2023, Tony helped his wife acquire a caregiver referral agency — performing the valuation, LOI, due diligence, and acquisition himself. Today he serves as CFO of the business, managing all financial operations while his wife leads as CEO.

Throughout his years as a business owner, Tony never lost his fascination with markets and capital. In 2022 he joined a proprietary trading firm out of New York as an equity trader, spending three years deepening his understanding of portfolio construction, investment strategy, and capital markets at a professional level. He holds the CFP® designation and joined The Zandbergen Group as a Wealth Advisor under RIA Axxcess Wealth Management.

Today Tony works exclusively with established, high net worth business owners who are building toward their next chapter. His clients get the insights that Tony has acquired throughout his years — which include someone who understands operating a business, the challenges that may be encountered, and raised a family through it all. Through those experiences, Tony uses that to understand how he can best support his clients.

That's what it means to speak both languages.
